Hebrews 9:27
Hebrews 9:2727Just as man is appointed to die once, and after that to face judgment,
"It is reserved for men to die once for all time, but after this to receive a judgment" (NWT). The Watchtower affirms the verse in general but works around it through three mechanisms: (a) the "second death" of Revelation 20 is treated as a separate event; (b) most non-JWs who die before Armageddon are taught to be annihilated without a resurrection (rs "Armageddon" entry, pp. 47-48); (c) those resurrected during the millennium face a post-millennial release of Satan as a final test. The result is that "die once, then judgment" is preserved verbally while the doctrine permits multiple post-resurrection jeopardy phases.
settles the structure of human eschatology in one sentence: one death, one judgment, settled. The verse rules out any doctrine in which the dead pass through additional probation phases. Pair with ("the one hearing my word and believing the One having sent me has everlasting life and does not come into judgment but has passed over from death to life" — perfect tense, completed action) and ("I write these things to you that you may know you have everlasting life"). The Watchtower's triple-jeopardy soteriology — surviving Armageddon, then surviving the millennium, then surviving the post-millennial release of Satan — multiplies tests after death in a way the verse forbids. Doorstep form: " says one death, one judgment. Where in your timeline are you finally secure?"
