NT Letters
Hebrews 9:14
14how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself unblemished to God, purify our consciences from works of death, so that we may serve the living God!

JW Usage

Jehovah's Witnesses cite as evidence that Jesus offered himself as a perfect, unblemished ransom — the exact equivalent of Adam. The "eternal spirit" through which Jesus offered himself is understood as Jehovah's active force enabling the sacrifice. The emphasis falls on Jesus' perfection as a human being rather than on the eternal nature of the spirit through which the sacrifice was made.

Protestant Usage

says Christ "through an eternal spirit offered himself without blemish to God." The phrase "eternal spirit" points to what makes this sacrifice categorically different from all previous offerings. Animal sacrifices were finite and had to be repeated (10:1-4); Christ's offering is "once for all time" (9:26) because it is made through something eternal. The effectiveness of the sacrifice is traced not merely to the perfection of the human victim but to the eternal nature of the spirit through which it was offered. The Trinitarian dimension is also visible: the Son offers himself through the Spirit to the Father — three persons involved in the one atoning act. confirms the gift exceeds the debt: "It is not with the gift as it was with the trespass" — the sacrifice overflows because its value is infinite, not mathematically equivalent.
