# Hebrews 9:13

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that their bodies are clean,

## JW Usage

Hebrews 9:13 — "the blood of goats and of bulls" sanctifying ceremonially defiled persons — is treated by JWs as background for the "how much more" comparison of verse 14, which they affirm: Christ's blood does more than animal blood could. The Watchtower stops at the "more effective sacrifice" reading without pressing the categorical comparison Hebrews is making between *finite* offerings and *infinite-worth* offering, because the categorical reading drives toward Christ's deity.

## Protestant Usage

Hebrews 9:13-14's "how much more" argument is structurally decisive against any "exact equivalent ransom" framework. If Christ's sacrifice were merely a perfect-human equivalent for Adam (the Watchtower's "corresponding ransom" doctrine), then the comparison with bulls and goats would simply be "a better exemplar of the same kind of sacrifice." But the author is making a *categorical* comparison: animal sacrifices could only cleanse ceremonially; Christ's sacrifice cleanses the conscience itself, "once for all time," because of *who he is*. Verse 14 attributes the efficacy to Christ "offered himself through an everlasting spirit" — the divine self-offering. Pair with Hebrews 10:4 (it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins) and Psalm 49:7-9 (no man can redeem his brother — the price is beyond their reach). Animal sacrifice failed because finite offerings cannot pay infinite debt; only Christ's infinite-worth offering succeeds.
