Hebrews 8:6
Hebrews 8:66Now, however, Jesus has received a much more excellent ministry, just as the covenant He mediates is better and is founded on better promises.
JWs cite to affirm that Jesus mediates a "better covenant" — but restrict his mediatorship to the 144,000 anointed. The Watchtower taught explicitly (1979, 1986, 1989, 2010) that Jesus is mediator of the new covenant only for "spiritual Israel," not for the millions in the "great crowd." Ordinary Witnesses benefit from the covenant indirectly, through the anointed, not as direct parties to it.
says Jesus "has obtained a more excellent public service, so that he is also the mediator of a correspondingly better covenant." The "better covenant" is better in every dimension — better promises, better mediator, better access. It is not more restrictive than the old covenant; it is more expansive. restates : God will write his law on their hearts and "from the least to the greatest" they will know him. That universalising phrase — "from the least to the greatest" — directly contradicts a two-class system that restricts covenant membership to an elite anointed group. First Timothy 2:5 says there is "one mediator between God and men" — not one mediator between God and 144,000. If Jesus is not a JW's personal mediator, then who stands between them and God? The Watchtower's answer, in effect, is the organisation itself.
