# Hebrews 6:4

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit,

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (1984 edition): "For it is impossible as regards those who have once for all been enlightened, and who have tasted the heavenly free gift, and who have become partakers of holy spirit,"
- NWT (2013 revision): "For as regards those who were once enlightened and who have tasted the heavenly free gift and who have become partakers of holy spirit"

## JW Usage

JWs read Hebrews 6:4-6 as a warning that anointed ones who fall away from "the truth" cannot be renewed to repentance. Within Watchtower pneumatology, "partakers of holy spirit" is treated as participation in an active force rather than indwelling by a person; falling away is read as forfeiting the spirit's blessing through serious sin or apostasy. The passage is sometimes deployed pastorally to reinforce the gravity of leaving the organisation, with the implication that the spirit can be withdrawn from the unfaithful.

## Protestant Usage

Hebrews 6:4 is among the most contested passages in the New Testament, and Reformed exegesis reads it as a hypothetical warning whose force depends on the impossibility-clause: those who have truly tasted these things and then deliberately and finally repudiate Christ cannot be renewed. The passage is descriptive of apostasy as a category, not a prediction that genuine believers will fall — Philippians 1:6 and 1 Peter 1:5 secure the perseverance of those the Spirit indwells. The verse does NOT teach that the Spirit can be withdrawn from the believer episodically; the warning concerns final repudiation of Christ, not ordinary sin or doubt. On the doorstep, do not get drawn into a Hebrews 6 exegetical battle — flag it as a separate conversation. The relevant point is that even on the strictest reading, Hebrews 6 describes the eschatological status of the apostate, not a daily conditional flow of spiritual blessing contingent on household cleanness.

## NWT Issue

The NWT renders "partakers of holy spirit" without the definite article and with "holy spirit" lowercase, in keeping with the Watchtower's active-force pneumatology. Standard English translations read "have shared in the Holy Spirit" (ESV) or "were made partakers of the Holy Spirit" (NASB, KJV), capitalising the Spirit as a personal participant. The lowercase choice flattens the personal sharing the participle metochous (partaker, sharer) describes — believers share in a Person, not draw on a force.
