Hebrews 6:1
Hebrews 6:11Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith in God,
— "let us press on to maturity" (NWT) — is treated by the Watchtower as an encouragement to deepen organisational participation. Maturity is operationalised as more meeting attendance, more field-service hours, eventually pioneering or Bethel service. The "elementary teachings" left behind are framed as basic JW indoctrination one progresses past as one becomes a deeper Witness.
's "elementary teachings about the Christ" are the things the chapter then names — repentance, faith toward God, baptisms, laying on of hands, resurrection, eternal judgment. These are not Watchtower 101; they are the foundational gospel doctrines the readers have already received. The "press on to maturity" is the call to remain in Christ's finished work and not retreat into the old sacrificial system (the audience's specific temptation, see 6:4-6 and 10:1-4). The retreat is works-based religion, not departure from an organisation. Pair with — maturity is having "powers of discernment trained to distinguish good from bad" through habitual use, which is exactly what commends in the Bereans who examined Scripture against Paul's own teaching. Maturity is Berean discernment, not deepened compliance.
