# Hebrews 3:7

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: “Today, if you hear His voice,

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (1984 edition): "For this reason, just as the holy spirit says: 'Today if you people listen to his own voice,'"
- NWT (2013 revision): "Therefore, just as the holy spirit says, 'Today if you listen to his voice,'"

## JW Usage

JWs cite Hebrews 3:7 as the writer applying Psalm 95 to first-century hearers — a warning against hardening one's heart. Within Watchtower pneumatology the Spirit is an "active force" rather than a person, so the introductory phrase "the holy spirit says" is read as a poetic way of attributing the words ultimately to Jehovah, with the Spirit as the impersonal medium of inspiration. The verse is pastorally used to motivate ongoing obedience to the organisation's voice.

## Protestant Usage

Hebrews 3:7 supplies decisive evidence that the Holy Spirit is a person, not an impersonal force. The writer introduces an Old Testament citation with the formula "the holy spirit says" — and what follows is a personal speech act in the first person, with intentions, warnings, and pastoral concern. Forces do not say. Forces do not warn. The same epistle treats the Spirit's speech as the Spirit's own voice (compare Acts 13:2, where the Spirit speaks the missionary commission, and Acts 5:3-4, where lying to the Spirit is immediately equated with lying to God). On the doorstep, ask gently: if the Spirit is electricity-like force, why does Hebrews 3:7 record him saying something? Pair this verse with Ephesians 4:30 (the Spirit can be grieved — only persons grieve), John 14:26 (he teaches), John 16:13 (he guides into truth), and 1 Corinthians 12:11 (he distributes gifts as he wills). The cumulative grammar is personal throughout.

## NWT Issue

The NWT renders the introductory clause "just as the holy spirit says" with "holy spirit" lowercase and without the definite article in the Greek nominative, in keeping with the Watchtower's active-force pneumatology. Standard English translations capitalise "Holy Spirit" because the verb "says" treats the Spirit as a speaking subject. The lowercase choice does not alter the underlying Greek but reinforces the impersonal-force reading the verse itself resists — forces do not speak.
