# Hebrews 2:4

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> and was affirmed by God through signs, wonders, various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to His will.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "while God joined in bearing witness with signs and wonders and various powerful works and with the holy spirit distributed according to his will."

## JW Usage

Understood as describing the first-century congregation, when miraculous gifts confirmed the apostles' message. The Watchtower teaches those gifts ceased with the apostolic period, and that Jehovah's backing today is shown instead by the worldwide preaching work and the organisation's unity and growth.

## Protestant Usage

Take the verse's structure seriously, because it describes a chain of attestation with three links: the message began to be spoken through the Lord, was verified by those who heard him, and God joined in bearing witness with signs, wonders and powerful works. That third link is the one to sit with. The apostles did not ask the first-century world to accept their authority on credit. God backed the claim with things people could see. Paul says the same at 2 Corinthians 12:12, naming signs and wonders as the marks of an apostle — not preaching activity, not organisational structure. So the question to ask about any later claim to be God's channel is simply: what attestation came with it? It is a fair question, asked without hostility, and it does not require litigating any particular doctrine or date. Russell claimed no miracle and offered no sign. The Watchtower's answer is Proverbs 4:18 — the light gets brighter, understanding grows. But growth in understanding is not a credential; it is what everyone claims. Hebrews names something checkable. Compare Acts 2:22, John 15:24, Deuteronomy 13:3.
