JW Usage

JWs cite to affirm that the Father is the one for whom and through whom all things exist — Jehovah alone as supreme Creator. Jesus in this verse is the "Chief Agent" (NWT) of salvation — a subordinate instrument. The Watchtower uses the verse to reinforce a hierarchy between the Father and the Son.

Protestant Usage

The parallel between and cuts against the hierarchy reading. uses "for whom" (di' hon) and "through whom" (di' hou) of the Father. uses the same prepositional pair — "through him" (di' autou) and "for him" (eis auton) — of the Son. Same Creator formula, two recipients. If the language makes the Father the supreme Creator at , the same language makes the Son the supreme Creator at . Either Jesus shares the divine creative category, or Paul and the author of Hebrews are using the identical prepositional grammar for two categorically different kinds of being. The simpler reading is that the Son does share the nature. Add 's "shared in flesh and blood likewise" and the incarnation frame is complete: the one through whom all things exist entered the flesh-and-blood of those he came to save.
