Hebrews 11:6

NT Letters
Hebrews 11:6
6And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who approaches Him must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.

JW Usage

The Watchtower uses — "without faith it is impossible to please God well" — as the foundation for its doctrine that salvation requires ongoing faith demonstrated in works of organisational service. "Earnestly seeking him" is read as active study of Watchtower publications, meeting attendance, and field service. The verse becomes a command to perform, not a description of how one comes to God.

Protestant Usage

is the definitional verse for faith in the New Testament, and its two objects of belief are both propositional trust, not programmatic activity: "he who approaches God must believe that he is and that he rewards those earnestly seeking him." Faith here is the posture with which one comes to God; rewards follow, but they do not precede or condition the approach. Pair with ("faith comes by hearing the word about Christ"), ("you have been saved through faith"), and ("to the one who does not work but believes on him who declares the ungodly righteous, his faith is counted as righteousness"). The verse does not authorise adding an organisational activity list to the approach to God. The one who seeks God seeks him directly — through Christ, not through an intermediary institution.
