Hebrews 10:26
Hebrews 10:2626If we deliberately go on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no further sacrifice for sins remains,
"If we practise sin wilfully after having received the accurate knowledge of the truth, there is no longer any sacrifice for sins remaining" (NWT 2013). The Watchtower reads this as a warning to JWs who receive "accurate knowledge" (a Watchtower technical term) and then lapse into sin or disassociation — such people forfeit the benefit of Christ's sacrifice entirely. The verse is sometimes used to buttress disfellowshipping discipline.
The "us" of 10:26 is the same "us" of 10:22-25 — believers being addressed as a corporate body. The warning against "practising sin wilfully" is not about individual lapses or a change of organisational affiliation; its immediate context is the Hebrews audience's temptation to drift back into the Old Testament sacrificial system (the book's central pastoral concern, see 6:1-6, 10:1, 13:9-14). To return to animal sacrifices after receiving the one-for-all offering of Christ is to repudiate the only sacrifice that takes away sin. The theological structure is the same as : "you who are trying to be justified by law have fallen away from grace." The verse is a warning against works-based retreats — and the Watchtower system is itself the retreat Hebrews warns against, not the remedy for it.
