# Hebrews 1:2

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> But in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, and through whom He made the universe.

## JW Usage

JWs read Hebrews 1:2 in two distinct directions. (1) Christologically, the verse is taken to support the master-worker model: God spoke "by means of a Son" and made "the systems of things" through him — Jesus is the agent or instrument through whom Jehovah created, not the Creator himself. (2) Eschatologically, the phrase "in these last days" is used to anchor the Watchtower's 1914 last-days timeline, arguing that Hebrews points forward to a "greater fulfilment" of the last-days theme that began with Christ's invisible presence in 1914. Both readings depend on softening Christ's role in creation and on disconnecting "last days" from its first-century setting.

## Protestant Usage

Hebrews 1:2 belongs to the seven-clause hymn-prologue (vv.2-4) that presents the Son in maximal divine terms: heir of all things, agent of creation, radiance of God's glory, exact imprint of his being, upholder of all things by his powerful word. The clause "through whom he made the worlds" (Greek aiōnas — the ages, the universe) attributes universal creation to the Son, paralleling John 1:3 and Colossians 1:16. Read alongside Isaiah 44:24 ("I am Jehovah, who made everything… by myself"), the only consistent reading is that the Son is included within the identity of the Creator — not a separate instrument. The phrase "in these last days" is also decisive against the 1914 timeline: the writer of Hebrews tells his first-century audience that they are already in the last days, in the same way Peter at Acts 2:16-17 declares Joel's last-days prophecy fulfilled at Pentecost, and John at 1 John 2:18 calls his own moment "the last hour." Six NT passages (Acts 2:17, Hebrews 1:2, 9:26, 1 Corinthians 10:11, 1 John 2:18, 1 Peter 1:20) place the last days in the first century, demolishing the 1914 starting point that the Watchtower's authority structure depends on.
