Genesis 15:7
Genesis 15:77The LORD also told him, “I am the LORD, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to possess.”
Standard JW reading: Jehovah reminds Abraham of his past rescue from Ur as the ground of the covenant that follows. The Watchtower treats the speaker in the chapter as Jehovah himself, but the mode of self-disclosure in verse 1 ("the word of Jehovah came") is flattened into "God communicated with Abraham" — the Word is a channel, not a person.
is where the "message-only" reading of verse 1 breaks. The one who came in the vision and said "I am your shield" now says "I am Jehovah who brought you out of Ur." The Word identifies himself as Jehovah — in the first person, with the covenant name, claiming the redemptive act of the Exodus-preview. Pair this with ("before Abraham came to be, I am"): Jesus claimed that Abraham saw his day (), and the most natural referent in Abraham's life for "seeing" Jesus is the visible pre-incarnate Word who appeared to him at Mamre (Genesis 18) and earlier in the covenant visions. The Word who says "I am Jehovah" in and the one who says "before Abraham was, I am" in have overlapping speech patterns for a reason.
