Genesis 15:6
Genesis 15:66Abram believed the LORD, and it was credited to him as righteousness.
is treated by JWs as a moment of covenantal crediting, but the theological weight of the verse is blunted by placing it alongside , where Abraham's faith is said to have been "completed" (NWT "made perfect") by the offering of Isaac in Genesis 22. The Watchtower reads the two passages as showing that faith without ongoing works does not finally justify — and ongoing works, in the JW system, include field service, meeting attendance, and organisational loyalty.
is the linchpin of justification by faith alone. Paul quotes it three times — , 9, 22; — each time as the Old Testament charter for grace-based righteousness. Abraham "put faith in Jehovah, and He counted it to him as righteousness" — declared righteous on the basis of trust, fifteen to thirty years before Isaac was born. James's "completed by works" () refers to Genesis 22 — a full generation after . The faith was real and crediting was complete at ; its visible character was demonstrated at Genesis 22. James is not saying works make faith justifying; he is saying works show that the justifying faith is the living kind. Paul and James are answering different questions: Paul asks "what grounds our right standing before God?" (faith); James asks "how do we tell whose faith is real?" (works). is Paul's text, and it decides the question at the crediting level.
