# Galatians 5:4

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> You who are trying to be justified by the law have been severed from Christ; you have fallen away from grace.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "You are separated from Christ, you who are trying to be declared righteous by means of law; you have fallen away from his undeserved kindness."

## JW Usage

Galatians 5:4 — "you who are trying to be declared righteous by means of law have been severed from Christ; you have fallen away from undeserved kindness" — is essentially absent from Watchtower discussions of salvation. When the verse cannot be avoided in a public reading, the Watchtower restricts its application narrowly to first-century Jewish circumcision and the Mosaic Law, and treats it as a purely historical warning to the Galatian church about Judaisers. The structural implication — that Paul's category "trying to be declared righteous by means of law" is broader than the Mosaic ceremonial code and applies to any law-based salvation system, including the Watchtower's own — is not engaged. The verse also creates a sharp internal pressure when read alongside the Watchtower's own teaching that salvation requires "exercising faith plus" field service, meeting attendance, organisational loyalty, and enduring to Armageddon, because Paul's warning is precisely against any "plus."

## Protestant Usage

Galatians 5:4 is the verse Paul aimed at first-century Galatians and that lands with full force on every modern works-based system, the Watchtower included. Three features carry the argument. First, Paul does not say "those who keep the Mosaic ceremonial law" — he says "those who would be justified by law" (en nomō dikaiousthe). The category is the general one — any law-keeping treated as the means of justification — not just the Mosaic ceremonial code. Second, the verb "severed" (katērgēthēte apo Christou) is in the passive: the act of trying to add law-keeping has the effect of cutting the believer off from Christ. Christ is not partially appropriated by faith and partially supplemented by works; he is appropriated entirely or not at all. Third, the warning sits two verses after Galatians 5:6 ("faith working through love is what counts") — meaning the same Paul who says faith naturally produces love says law-keeping nullifies faith. The two are not in tension; love is the fruit, not the ground. The verse is therefore the head text for the Galatian-parallel critique of the Watchtower: a system that requires "faith plus" any list of obediences — however sincerely undertaken — is, on Paul's own definition, the system from which believers have been freed and to which they must not return. Used in arguments 018 (galatians-parallel), 045 (galatians3-spirit), 118 (parachute-analogy), 119 (just- and-merciful), and 156 (galatians5-6-faith-working-love).

## NWT Issue

NWT renders *tēs charitos exepesate* as "you have fallen away from his undeserved kindness" rather than "you have fallen away from grace" — the systemic NWT *charis* → "undeserved kindness" pattern (compare Romans 5:15, Ephesians 2:8, 2 Corinthians 13:14). Paul is using *charis* here as a technical theological category — the new-covenant sphere in which believers stand, as opposed to the sphere of law. "Fallen away from grace" reads as departure from a theological state; "fallen away from his undeserved kindness" reads as departure from a personal favour. The category-loss dulls the warning that law-keeping as justification severs the believer from the very grace-economy in which Christian standing is maintained.
