JW Usage

JWs cite the fruit of the Spirit as evidence that Jehovah's organisation produces the marks of true religion. The "fruitage of the spirit" (NWT) — love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, mildness, self-control — is attributed to the organisation's training programme rather than to the direct work of the Holy Spirit in individual believers.

Protestant Usage

Paul describes these qualities as "the fruit of the Spirit" — they are produced by the Spirit's indwelling presence, not by organisational compliance. The singular "fruit" (karpos) indicates a unified cluster flowing from one source, not a checklist of behaviours to achieve. The context is critical: says "if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law." Paul contrasts Spirit-produced character with law-driven effort. Jesus' yoke-test in provides the experiential check: if following an organisation's requirements leaves a person weary and anxious rather than bearing love, joy, and peace, that is not the fruit the Spirit produces. The fruit test also cannot distinguish voluntary virtue from coerced uniformity — when disagreement triggers judicial proceedings, the resulting conformity is evidence of the coercion mechanism, not necessarily of genuine fruit.
