# Galatians 5:22

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

## JW Usage

JWs cite the fruit of the Spirit as evidence that Jehovah's organisation produces the marks of true religion. The "fruitage of the spirit" (NWT) — love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, mildness, self-control — is attributed to the organisation's training programme rather than to the direct work of the Holy Spirit in individual believers.

## Protestant Usage

Paul describes these qualities as "the fruit of the Spirit" — they are produced by the Spirit's indwelling presence, not by organisational compliance. The singular "fruit" (karpos) indicates a unified cluster flowing from one source, not a checklist of behaviours to achieve. The context is critical: Galatians 5:18 says "if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law." Paul contrasts Spirit-produced character with law-driven effort. Jesus' yoke-test in Matthew 11:28–30 provides the experiential check: if following an organisation's requirements leaves a person weary and anxious rather than bearing love, joy, and peace, that is not the fruit the Spirit produces. The fruit test also cannot distinguish voluntary virtue from coerced uniformity — when disagreement triggers judicial proceedings, the resulting conformity is evidence of the coercion mechanism, not necessarily of genuine fruit.
