# Galatians 5:16

> So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "But I say, Keep walking by spirit and you will carry out no fleshly desire at all."

## JW Usage

JWs read "keep walking by spirit" as an exhortation to maintain conduct in line with Watchtower-defined holiness — meeting attendance, field service, abstaining from worldly associations. The lowercase "spirit" supports the active-force model: walking by spirit means walking in step with the spirit's energy as it flows through the organisation's arrangements.

## Protestant Usage

Paul's contrast in Galatians 5 is between two governing principles: the flesh (self-effort under law-keeping) and the Spirit (the indwelling third person of the Godhead, who produces fruit — love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control, vv. 22-23). Walking by the Spirit is not following organisational instructions; it is yielding moment by moment to the personal Holy Spirit who indwells the believer. The architecture matters because Galatians as a whole is Paul's defence of gospel freedom against any system that smuggles performance back into standing. The doorstep insight: the brother fighting pornography or the mother fearing she has blocked the household spirit needs the PERSON of the Spirit working in her, not a tribunal verifying her compliance. Walking by the Spirit is the rescue architecture Galatians 5 prescribes — it is incompatible with a probationary performance review.

## NWT Issue

NWT renders "keep walking by spirit", lowercase. The Greek pneumati here is the same Holy Spirit who produces the fruit-list four verses later, and major translations capitalise. The lowercase tracks the Watchtower's pattern of denying the Spirit's personhood and softens the contrast Paul draws between flesh-driven striving and Spirit-empowered freedom.
