# Galatians 5:13

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> For you, brothers, were called to freedom; but do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh. Rather, serve one another in love.

## JW Usage

The Watchtower's use of 5:13 typically collapses "through love slave for one another" into "loyalty to the theocratic arrangement." Organisational service — meeting attendance, field service, support of elders — is presented as the form love takes when it works itself out. The effect is to redirect Paul's horizontal command (service to one another) into a vertical duty (service to the hierarchy).

## Protestant Usage

Paul's own definition rules the Watchtower reading out. In the same sentence where he calls believers to "slave for one another," he opens with "you were called to freedom." The slavery is to each other's good, not to a chain of command. Two verses earlier (5:6) he said the only thing that counts is "faith working through love"; four verses later (5:22) he lists love as the first fruit of the Spirit — alongside joy, peace, patience, kindness. Field-service hours, meeting attendance, and organisational loyalty do not appear on the list. The doorstep question: love for whom? Paul says one another — your neighbour, the struggling brother, the widow. Not a governing structure. The freedom Christ gave is not to gratify the flesh; it is also not to be re-collared to a human institution.

## Arguments Using This Verse

- [Faith Working Through Love](https://jw-apologetics.app/arguments/galatians5-6-faith-working-love.md) — Galatians 5:6 — is love the root or the fruit of faith? [Salvation]
