# Galatians 3:21

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> Is the law, then, opposed to the promises of God? Certainly not! For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come from the law.

## JW Usage

JWs read 3:21 as a statement about the Mosaic Law specifically: no law of Moses could give life, which is why the ransom was necessary. The Watchtower does not usually notice that Paul's universal framing — "if *a* law had been given that could give life" — rules out law-as- mechanism in principle, not just Torah as one expired example.

## Protestant Usage

Paul's subjunctive is diagnostic. He is not saying "no *Mosaic* law could give life" — he is saying no law, of any kind, from any source, could ever be the mechanism of righteousness. Righteousness by law is structurally impossible, because law has no power to impart the life that righteousness requires; it can only measure what it finds. Romans 8:3 states the same diagnosis: "what the Law could not do because it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending his own Son." This verse is the death certificate of every works-salvation system that ever rebranded itself — Mosaic, monastic, or organisational. If law could have done it, it would already have been done through law. It wasn't. That is why Christ came.

## Arguments Using This Verse

- [Grace Defeats Sin — Law Doesn't](https://jw-apologetics.app/arguments/romans6-14.md) — Romans 6:14 — the verse that inverts the Watchtower's whole approach [Sanctification]
