# Galatians 2:20

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (1984 edition): "I am impaled along with Christ. It is no longer I that live, but it is Christ that is living in union with me. Indeed, the life that I now live in flesh I live by the faith that is toward the Son of God, who loved me and handed himself over for me."
- NWT (2013 revision): "I have been nailed to the stake along with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who is living in union with me. Indeed, the life that I now live in flesh I live by faith toward the Son of God, who loved me and handed himself over for me."

## JW Usage

Galatians 2:20 is typically applied by the Watchtower only to the 144,000 anointed class, for whom personal indwelling is a real spiritual reality. For the Great Crowd, the indwelling is framed as association through the organisation rather than personal in-Christ union.

## Protestant Usage

Paul writes in the first person singular — "I am nailed," "I live," "Christ lives in me" — describing what is true of every believer by faith. The grammar cannot be restricted to a spiritual elite without making Paul's "the life that I now live in flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, the one who loved *me* and handed himself over for *me*" a statement about 144,000 people only. Paul's point is universal Christian identity: every believer has been crucified with Christ (Romans 6:6), every believer is indwelt by Christ through the Spirit (Romans 8:9 — "if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to him"), every believer lives by faith in the Son of God. Colossians 1:27 names the corresponding hope — "Christ in you, the hope of glory." Galatians 2:20 is the personal, intimate, apostolic-love language that describes the shared condition of every Christian: not association through an organisation, but personal union with Christ who "loved me and handed himself over for me." At the door, the verse is a gentle invitation: "If that sounds like good news to you, it's because Paul was writing about the standard Christian experience — not a restricted elite."

## NWT Issue

Where Paul's Greek reads Χριστὸς ἐν ἐμοί ("Christ in me"), the NWT renders "Christ who is living in union with me." This is the same systemic *en* → "in union with" expansion the NWT applies wherever Paul's "in Christ" or "Christ in [someone]" formulae occur (compare Colossians 1:27, Colossians 3:3, Romans 8:1, 2 Corinthians 5:17, Philippians 3:9, 1 Corinthians 1:2, Galatians 3:28, Ephesians 2:10). The phrase ἐν here carries the ordinary Greek sense of personal indwelling, not relational association. "In union with" reads as union-as-membership, which fits the Watchtower's two-class ecclesiology where the 144,000 enjoy real indwelling and the Great Crowd enjoy organisational association. No standard English translation (ESV, NASB, NIV, NRSV, KJV, CSB) renders the phrase that way. The expansion is interpretive, not lexical.
