Galatians 2:14

NT Letters
Galatians 2:14
14When I saw that they were not walking in line with the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas in front of them all, “If you, who are a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?”

Not a verse the Watchtower dwells on. Where it appears, Paul's rebuke is read as a first-century correction on the Jewish-Gentile question, settled long ago. The phrase "the truth of the good news" passes without comment — in Watchtower vocabulary "the Truth" has come to name the organisation and its body of teaching, so a Witness reading this verse would hear their own usage confirmed rather than challenged.

Two things worth drawing out, and they are unrelated, so pick one. On vocabulary: notice what "the truth" attaches to here. It is the truth of the good news — the gospel itself. That is how the New Testament consistently uses the phrase: the truth is Jesus (), the Spirit of truth (), and the word of truth which is the gospel (, ). It is never an institution. When "the Truth" becomes a name for an organisation — "I came into the Truth," "my parents are still in the Truth" — the organisation has quietly taken the place the New Testament gives to Christ. Ask kindly what a Witness means by the phrase, and then read these verses. On leadership: Paul publicly rebuked Peter, and both men remained apostles. The rebuke is preserved in Scripture, and years later Peter called Paul "our beloved brother" whose letters belong with the rest of the Scriptures. That is what correction inside a healthy body looks like — public, survivable, and followed by reconciliation. It is worth laying beside how disagreement is handled in the organisation. Compare , , .
