# Galatians 2:11

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> When Cephas came to Antioch, however, I opposed him to his face, because he stood to be condemned.

## JW Usage

Jehovah's Witnesses rarely foreground Galatians 2:11 in their own literature because it sits awkwardly with the unified-channel doctrine. When pressed on it, the standard Watchtower response is that "Jehovah uses imperfect men" — Peter's lapse at Antioch is reframed as personal weakness rather than as evidence against centralised apostolic authority. The verse never appears in Watchtower discussions of "submitting to the faithful slave" because its plain sense — one apostle publicly correcting another — undermines the demand for unquestioning obedience to the Governing Body.

## Protestant Usage

Galatians 2:11 is one of the most decisive verses against the Watchtower's "single channel of communication" claim. Paul withstood Peter "to his face" — the apostle widely (and wrongly) regarded by later traditions as the supreme head of the church — and did so publicly, in front of the Antioch congregation, over a doctrinal matter (table fellowship between Jew and Gentile believers). The Greek phrase "kata prosōpon autō antestēn" emphasises both the public visibility ("face to face") and the seriousness ("I stood against him") of the rebuke. If the New Testament model permitted one apostle to publicly correct another over the gospel itself, then no later body — Governing Body, magisterium, or otherwise — can claim immunity from being tested against Scripture by ordinary believers. Used in argument 027 (governing-body) as the answer to "Jehovah has always used a centralised organisation" and in argument 121 (name-the-channel) as part of the New Testament's distributed-accountability pattern.
