# Galatians 1:6

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> I am amazed how quickly you are deserting the One who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel—

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "I am amazed that you are so quickly turning away from the One who called you with Christ's undeserved kindness to another sort of good news."

## JW Usage

JWs are familiar with Paul's warning about "another sort of good news" (Galatians 1:6-9) but apply it outward — to Christendom's corrupted gospel. The Watchtower presents its message as the restoration of the original gospel: faith in Jesus plus obedience to Jehovah's organisation equals salvation. Paul's warning is not applied reflexively to the Watchtower's own additions to the gospel.

## Protestant Usage

Paul confronted people saying "Yes to Jesus, but also your works determine your standing with God" — and his verdict was devastating: "a different gospel" (Galatians 1:6). The pattern he condemned is structurally identical to the Watchtower's soteriology: faith in Jesus plus organisational loyalty, field service, meeting attendance, and endurance to the end. Paul goes further in verses 8-9: "even if we or an angel out of heaven were to declare to you as good news something beyond what we declared... let him be accursed." The JW parallel is uniquely pointed: their Christology teaches Jesus is Michael the Archangel — literally "an angel from heaven" preaching a creature-Christology gospel. Islam has Jibril, Mormonism has Moroni, and the Watchtower has Michael — each an angelic figure delivering a message that differs from Paul's gospel. Paul's warning anticipated exactly this pattern.

## NWT Issue

NWT renders *chariti Christou* as "Christ's undeserved kindness" rather than "the grace of Christ" — part of the systemic NWT pattern that replaces *charis* with "undeserved kindness" across the Pauline corpus (compare Romans 5:15, Ephesians 2:8, 2 Corinthians 13:14). Etymologically defensible (*charis* does include the nuance of unmerited favour), but the near-total replacement homogenises *charis* into one narrow semantic category and loses the biblical range (grace as gift, favour, power, sanctifying influence). Here the effect softens Paul's shocked contrast — "the one who called you with Christ's grace" becomes "Christ's undeserved kindness," which reads more like a transactional favour than the relational-covenant language Paul is invoking.

## Arguments Using This Verse

- [The Galatians Parallel](https://jw-apologetics.app/arguments/galatians-parallel.md) — Judaisers = Watchtower pattern [Salvation]
- [The Angel from Heaven](https://jw-apologetics.app/arguments/angel-from-heaven.md) — Galatians 1:8 — Three-Way Angel Parallel [Deity of Christ]
