# Galatians 1:16

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> to reveal His Son in me so that I might preach Him among the Gentiles, I did not rush to consult with flesh and blood,

## JW Usage

Galatians 1:16 — "I did not immediately consult with any human" (literally "flesh and blood") — is not heavily featured in JW proof-texts. It enters the discussion mostly through idiom analysis, where the Watchtower's reading of "flesh and blood" elsewhere (especially 1 Corinthians 15:50) is treated as denying bodily resurrection.

## Protestant Usage

Galatians 1:16 is a clean idiom-case. Paul says he did not consult "flesh and blood" (*sarki kai haimati*) — meaning he did not seek out human authority or human advice. "Flesh and blood" here clearly means "mortal humans," not "physical substance" or "meat and fluid." Jesus uses the same idiom in Matthew 16:17 — "flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but my Father in heaven" — with the identical meaning: ordinary human sources. Paul uses it again in Ephesians 6:12 — "our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the governments" — where "flesh and blood" means human beings as contrasted with spirit beings. And 1 Corinthians 15:50 uses the same phrase paired with "the perishable" to describe mortal human weakness. The Watchtower's move — using "flesh and blood cannot inherit the Kingdom of God" (1 Cor 15:50) to deny bodily resurrection — reads a biological claim out of a standard Semitic idiom. The four parallel uses (Matthew 16:17, Galatians 1:16, Ephesians 6:12, 1 Corinthians 15:50) settle the meaning: "flesh and blood" = mortal human. The resurrection body of Luke 24:39 is "flesh and bones" — real and physical, but no longer mortal.
