Ezekiel 36:27

OT Prophets
Ezekiel 36:27
27And I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes and to carefully observe My ordinances.
Read in NWT ↗
JW Usage

Read as Jehovah's spirit helping those who study and apply his standards to live by them. The Watchtower's framework treats obedience as the believer's ongoing responsibility, with holy spirit as assistance rather than as the cause of the walking.

Protestant Usage

This verse is where the promise becomes uncomfortable for a performance framework, because God claims the obedience itself: I will put my spirit inside you, and I will cause you to walk in my regulations. Not help you to walk. Cause you to walk. The obedience is the outcome of what God does, not the condition for it. Set that beside a system in which meeting attendance, field service hours and continued loyalty are what keep a person in God's favour. The order is reversed. Ezekiel has God producing the walking; the requirement system has the walking producing God's approval. Paul carries the same order into — God is the one working in you, both to will and to act — and asks the Galatians the question directly at 3:3: having begun by spirit, are you now being perfected by flesh? The pastoral point is the one to lead with. Many Witnesses are exhausted by a standard they can never be sure they have met. This verse says the walking is something God undertakes to produce.
