# Ezekiel 26:7

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> For this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Behold, I will bring against Tyre from the north Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, king of kings, with horses and chariots, with cavalry and a great company of troops.

## JW Usage

The Watchtower cites Ezekiel 26:7 — where Nebuchadnezzar is called "the king of kings" — alongside Daniel 2:37 to argue that "King of kings" is a transferable imperial title. The phrase carries no ontological weight when applied to Jesus in Revelation 19:16 on this reading — it simply marks him as supreme among earthly rulers.

## Protestant Usage

Scripture uses "king of kings" at two different altitudes, and Ezekiel 26:7 is useful because it establishes the lower one explicitly. Nebuchadnezzar is "the king of kings" in the sense of a human emperor at the top of a human hierarchy — supreme among peers, not supreme over all reality. Deuteronomy 10:17 applies "Lord of lords" to Jehovah in a different, ontological sense — supreme over every reality that exists. When Revelation 17:14 calls Jesus "Lord of lords and King of kings" and explains that he *is* this (not that he was appointed to the role), the echo matches Deuteronomy 10:17, not Ezekiel 26:7. 1 Timothy 6:15-16 confirms the altitude: the one "King of kings" is also the one who "alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light" — attributes Nebuchadnezzar never had. Ezekiel 26:7 shows that Scripture can use the phrase at the human-emperor altitude; it does not dictate that every use is at that altitude.
