Exodus 24:10

OT Law
Exodus 24:10
10and they saw the God of Israel. Under His feet was a work like a pavement made of sapphire, as clear as the sky itself.

JW Usage

JWs read "they got to see the God of Israel" as a partial or mediated seeing — supported by the JW axiom that the transcendent Jehovah cannot be directly seen. The plain language of seeing is treated as ceremonial or visionary, not as the kind of ocular sight that would identify the pre-incarnate Son.

Protestant Usage

Read what the verse actually says: "they got to see the God of Israel, and under his feet there was what seemed like a pavement of sapphire stones." Straightforward, public sight by named witnesses. Read with verse 11 — Moses, Aaron, Nadab, Abihu, and seventy elders "ate and drank" in God's presence without being struck down. Seventy-four named witnesses physically saw the God of Israel and shared a covenant meal with him. If "no one has seen the Father" (; 1:18), the God these witnesses saw cannot be the Father. The only coherent identification is the pre-incarnate Son — the God of Israel whom Isaiah will later see enthroned (Isaiah 6) and whom John identifies as Jesus ().
