# Ephesians 4:6

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.

## JW Usage

"One God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all" is read by JWs as the culmination of Paul's sevenfold unity. The universal scope is accepted; what is disputed is whether every item in the list applies to every Christian. The Watchtower framework tiers access — the 144,000 anointed have the Father "in all" as indwelling; the Great Crowd relates to Jehovah through the organisation's mediation.

## Protestant Usage

The sevenfold unity ends at the widest possible angle: one God *over all*, *through all*, *in all*. Paul triples the universal scope to close off any loophole. If "one God" at 4:6 means anything other than every believer's God, the verse cannot be parsed — Paul writes "in all" precisely to exclude partition. The *in* is the decisive word. 1 Corinthians 3:16 — "do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's spirit dwells in you?" Romans 8:9 — "if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to him." Every believer is indwelt; every believer is "in" the "one God" of Ephesians 4:6. There is no tier where God is "with" a believer but not "in" them. Pair Ephesians 4:6 with Ephesians 4:4 ("one hope") and the conclusion follows with force: the one God who is *in* every believer has given every believer the one hope of his presence. No two-class arrangement survives the grammar.

Verses 4-6 also carry a three-part shape: "one spirit" (v. 4), "one Lord" (v. 5), "one God and Father of all" (v. 6). Paul grounds the church's unity in the Spirit, the Lord Jesus and the Father together, just as in 1 Corinthians 12:4-6 ("the same spirit... the same Lord... the same God") and 2 Corinthians 13:14. When it is objected that "over all" places the Father over Christ, the order is not denied, since the Son willingly serves the Father's purpose. But the same letter seats Christ "far above every government and authority and power and lordship and every name that is named" (1:21) and has him ascend "far above all the heavens, so that he might give fullness to all things" (4:10). "Through all and in all" is language Paul also uses of Christ (Colossians 3:11, "Christ is all things and in all").
