# Ephesians 4:4

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to one hope when you were called;

## JW Usage

JWs redefine "one hope" as referring exclusively to the heavenly hope of the 144,000 anointed class. The great crowd has a separate earthly hope. This creates two hopes from Paul's explicit "one hope," a tension the Watchtower resolves by limiting the verse's audience to anointed Christians.

## Protestant Usage

Paul's sevenfold unity in Ephesians 4:4–6 is an all-or-nothing package: one body, one Spirit, one hope, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God. If "one hope" actually means two hopes, then "one baptism" means two baptisms, "one Lord" means two Lords, and "one faith" means two faiths. The Watchtower must break the entire passage to maintain its two-class doctrine. The letter addresses the entire Ephesian congregation, not a select anointed class. Jesus' Sermon on the Mount confirms the same: he promises both "the kingdom of the heavens" (Matthew 5:3, 10) and "the earth" (5:5) to a single audience — two hopes require two audiences in a passage that plainly has one. Revelation 21:1–3 resolves the tension: heaven comes down to earth.
