# Ephesians 4:3

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> and with diligence to preserve the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (2013 revision): "earnestly endeavoring to maintain the oneness of the spirit in the uniting bond of peace."

## JW Usage

JWs cite "the oneness of the spirit in the uniting bond of peace" to argue that worldwide doctrinal uniformity — every Kingdom Hall teaching the same study article on the same week — is the visible fulfilment of this unity. The organisation's centralised teaching programme is presented as the modern expression of Paul's "uniting bond". Disagreement with Governing Body teaching is recast as threatening this Spirit-given oneness.

## Protestant Usage

Paul's "oneness of the Spirit" is the unity the Holy Spirit himself produces among believers united to Christ — across cultures, across congregations, across centuries. It is not procedural uniformity generated by a centralised publishing arm; it is organic Spirit-formed communion grounded in "one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father" (verses 4-6). The doorstep test is simple: when shunning policy separates parents from baptised children who quietly disagree about doctrine, has the unity of the Spirit been preserved or torn? Paul's unity heals families; institutional uniformity that severs them is a different shape. And the bond is "peace", not enforced silence — a peace large enough to hold real brothers who are still wrestling with the texts.

## NWT Issue

NWT renders "the oneness of the spirit in the uniting bond of peace", lowercase "spirit". The Greek phrase ten henoteta tou pneumatos unambiguously refers to the Holy Spirit as the agent of the unity; major translations capitalise. The lowercase reflects the Watchtower's active-force pneumatology and weakens the verse's testimony to a personal Spirit who himself is the bond's source.
