JW Usage

— "far above every government and authority and power and lordship and every name that is named, not only in this system of things but also in that to come" — is accepted by JWs as a description of Christ's exalted status, but the "not only in this system of things" clause is often read as pointing primarily to the future millennial age.

Protestant Usage

Paul's grammar does not permit the deferral. He says Christ is "far above every government and authority and power and lordship and every name that is named" now — in this age — "not only in this system of things but also in that to come." The "not only… but also" structure expands, it does not defer. Christ's authority over the present age is the starting point; his authority over the age to come adds to that, not replaces it. Combined with verse 20's aorist enthronement and verse 22's comprehensive "he subjected all things under his feet," the picture is decisive: Christ is already supreme over every authority in the present age. There is no higher authority left for a 1914 enthronement, a future Armageddon, or a millennial kingdom to add. The future consummation is the universal confession of what is already true (), not the acquisition of new authority.
