Ephesians 1:13
Ephesians 1:1313And in Him, having heard and believed the word of truth—the gospel of your salvation—you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,
— "you also hoped in him after you heard the word of truth, the good news about your salvation. By means of him also, after you believed, you were sealed with the promised holy spirit" — is applied by JWs specifically to the 144,000 anointed class. The "sealing" of the holy spirit is the distinguishing mark of the anointed; the Great Crowd does not receive that seal and is not part of the heavenly calling of the subsequent verses.
Paul writes to "the holy ones who are in Ephesus and faithful ones in union with Christ Jesus" (1:1). The "you" of is every believer in that congregation — the whole church of Ephesus, tens of thousands of ordinary Christians. Paul does not signal a hidden 144,000 subset hearing the word of truth, believing the good news, and being sealed with the Spirit. Every Christian in Ephesus is in view. And Paul's logic is unambiguous: the sealing follows belief. Faith in the gospel produces the seal of the Spirit on every believer. Pair with — "if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to him." The Spirit's indwelling is not a tier-marker distinguishing first-class Christians from second-class ones; it is the criterion for being a Christian at all. and 5:5 reinforce the point: the Spirit is the "seal" and the "down-payment" — the first instalment of the inheritance that belongs to every believer who has trusted Christ.
