JW Usage

JWs accept as God's standard for testing prophets but insulate the Watchtower by insisting they "never claimed to be inspired prophets — only imperfect men doing their best." The verse is acknowledged in principle while the organisation's failed predictions about 1874, 1914, 1925, 1975, and the overlapping "generation" of 1914 are recategorised as "expectations" or "imperfect human understanding" rather than as messages spoken in Jehovah's name.

Protestant Usage

asks how to recognise a false prophet: "when the prophet speaks in the name of Jehovah and the word does not occur or come true." The standard is the outcome, not the intention. The Watchtower's insulation language — "we never said inspired" — does not survive contact with their own published claims. The 1922 Watchtower called its dates "the stamp of approval of Almighty God." The Awake! masthead promised for decades to publish only what was "of divine origin." If predictions made under those banners fail, applies by the Watchtower's own framing. The "this generation" interpretation has been revised at least six times as each previous generation died off — most recently the 2010 "overlapping generations" model. If "this generation" means what it means everywhere else in the Gospels (Jesus' contemporaries), the entire 1914 framework collapses, and the Watchtower's authority claim with it.
