Deuteronomy 13:1
Deuteronomy 13:11If a prophet or dreamer of dreams arises among you and proclaims a sign or wonder to you,
Deuteronomy 13 is rarely applied by the Watchtower to itself. The passage — "If a prophet or a dreamer of dreams arises in your midst and gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or the wonder that he spoke of comes true … do not listen to the words of that prophet" if he leads you to serve other gods — is usually pointed outward at Christendom rather than inward at the organisation.
names the second of Jehovah's two tests for any teaching authority. gives the accuracy test (a single failed prophecy disqualifies). gives the fidelity test: even when signs and wonders appear to confirm a teacher, if that teacher leads people to a different god, they must be rejected. The second test matters because it survives any appeal to "we didn't claim to be inspired." A system that redefines Jesus — "a god" (NWT ), Michael the archangel before his earthly life, not the object of prayer, not coordinately worshipped with the Father — has moved away from the God the apostles preached. The Watchtower fails Deuteronomy 18 on its record of failed date-setting (1914's meaning, 1925, 1975, the "this generation" teaching), and it fails Deuteronomy 13 on its Christology. The two tests together close the exit that "we never claimed to be inspired" tries to leave open.
