Daniel 9:27

OT Prophets
Daniel 9:27
27And he will confirm a covenant with many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of the temple will come the abomination that causes desolation, until the decreed destruction is poured out upon him.”

JW Usage

— "and upon the wing of disgusting things there will be the one causing desolation" — is part of the Watchtower's cluster of abomination-of-desolation texts, typically read alongside and 12:11 as elements of a modern end-times framework mapping the League of Nations (1919) or the United Nations onto a twentieth-century fulfilment. The first- century referent is acknowledged but framed as "primary" fulfilment only.

Protestant Usage

's desolation promise is fulfilled at two moments the New Testament itself identifies. The "covenant for many for one week" is the Messianic covenant Jesus confirmed — and then at the middle of the week, Messiah was "cut off" causing sacrifice and offering to cease (the Temple system's theological expiration with the torn veil). The "wing of disgusting things" causing desolation lands on Jesus's Olivet warning. Where records him citing Daniel's disgusting thing, records the same warning as "when you see Jerusalem surrounded by encamped armies, then know that the desolating of her has drawn near." Cestius Gallus's Roman legions surrounded Jerusalem in AD 66; the Jerusalem Christians fled to Pella (Eusebius, Church History 3.5.3); Titus returned in AD 70 and destroyed the city and the sanctuary — fulfilling the second half of as well. Two anchored fulfilments, the covenant confirmed by Messiah and the city desolated by Rome, handle without requiring a twentieth-century superstructure.
