Cited for confidence in Jehovah's power to deliver, and for the courage the Watchtower asks of Witnesses under pressure — during bans, in the workplace, over blood transfusions. "Our God whom we serve" is read as a statement of exclusive allegiance.

Protestant Usage

The phrase to hold onto is "our God whom we serve." The Aramaic verb is pelach, and in Daniel it is never casual. It is the service that distinguishes the true God from the gods of Babylon, and it is exactly what these men are prepared to die rather than give elsewhere. Keep it in mind through the next four chapters, because Daniel uses it with striking consistency — 3:12, 3:18, 3:28, 6:16, 6:20 — and then gives it away once. At , all peoples, nations and language groups render that service to the son of man who comes with the clouds, and his rulership is everlasting. If the word means what these three men are about to walk into a furnace over, then the figure who receives it universally in chapter 7 is not a delegate. Compare , .
