# Daniel 12:11

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> And from the time the daily sacrifice is abolished and the abomination of desolation set up, there will be 1,290 days.

## JW Usage

Daniel 12:11 — "and from the time that the constant feature has been removed and the disgusting thing that causes desolation has been put in place, there will be 1,290 days" — is part of the Watchtower's end-times numerology. JWs have variously mapped the 1,290 days and the 1,335 days of verse 12 onto calendar periods in the organisation's own history, particularly across 1914-1919.

## Protestant Usage

Verse 11 is the pair of Daniel 11:31 — same "disgusting thing that causes desolation," same desecration-and-restoration pattern. In the near-term context the 1,290 days match the period between Antiochus IV's desecration of the Temple (December 167 BCE) and its rededication at Hanukkah (December 164 BCE) — just over three and a half years, which is the standard Maccabean-era reading. Jesus then reuses the pattern in Luke 21:20-24, where Jerusalem surrounded by armies is the *new* "disgusting thing" and the AD 66-70 Roman siege is the new desolation. Neither fulfilment requires mapping the 1,290 days onto a twentieth-century date. The Watchtower's 1914-1919 arithmetic is built on a 607 BCE starting date for Jerusalem's fall that no standard chronology accepts (the historical consensus is 586/587 BCE). Without the 607 date the entire superstructure of Watchtower end-times arithmetic loses its foundation — and Daniel 12:11 returns to the straightforward Maccabean/Roman reading the text's original audience would have recognised.
