Colossians 4:6
Colossians 4:66Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.
The Watchtower cites "let your words always be gracious, seasoned with salt" as general counsel for householders during field service. The emphasis tends to fall on keeping composure under opposition — respectful speech as a witnessing asset rather than as a disposition owed to every person you meet.
Paul's instruction governs Christian speech in every direction, and it is the doorstep principle for any believer talking with a Jehovah's Witness. "Always" — not only when you are being listened to politely. "Gracious" — full of grace, not sarcasm. "Seasoned with salt" — flavoured, preserving, interesting, not bland and not corrosive. "So that you will know how you should answer each person" — one person at a time, tailored to the human being in front of you. Pair with ("be ready to make a defence … with a mild temper and deep respect") and ("a slave of the Lord does not need to fight, but needs to be gentle toward all"). The goal at the door is not to win the argument. It is to plant one true, Christ-shaped sentence that the JW can carry home and turn over for days. That requires speech that is gentle, accurate, warm, and brief — Paul's four-ingredient recipe exactly.
