# Colossians 2:8

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, which are based on human tradition and the spiritual forces of the world rather than on Christ.

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (1984 edition): "the philosophy and empty deception according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary things of the world and not according to Christ"
- NWT (2013 revision): "the philosophy and empty deception according to human tradition, according to the elementary things of the world and not according to Christ"

## JW Usage

Colossians 2:8 is the Watchtower's primary proof-text against Christian tradition broadly. JWs cite "philosophy and empty deception according to human tradition" to condemn Christmas, Easter, the Trinity, the immortal soul, the cross, and any other doctrine the organisation classifies as post-apostolic. The verse functions as the categorical warrant for rejecting all tradition that did not originate with the Bible Students after 1870.

## Protestant Usage

Paul condemns a specific kind of tradition — "human tradition... not according to Christ" — that competes with Christ for the Colossian believers' loyalty. The category is content-defined, not date-defined. In the very same letter Paul uses paradosis positively (compare 2 Thess 2:15 — "hold to the traditions you were taught") and at 1 Cor 15:3 he describes the gospel itself as something he "received" and "handed on" — the technical paradosis verbs. The test is whether a tradition preserves apostolic teaching or overrides it, not whether it dates from before or after the apostles. The Watchtower's blanket "post-apostolic = corrupt" rule has no biblical basis and would, if applied consistently, dissolve the Watchtower itself as a 145-year-old tradition handed down from Russell, Rutherford, and Knorr.

## NWT Issue

The NWT renders stoicheia tou kosmou as "elementary things of the world" — defensible (consensus translations split between "elemental spirits" and "basic principles") but reading more abstract than the Greek's likely reference to cosmic powers or fundamental religious systems. The bigger apologetic point is what the verse actually condemns: a specific kind of tradition not according to Christ, not tradition as a category. The NWT's translation does not shift that, but Watchtower exposition routinely treats v.8 as if it categorically banned all post-apostolic tradition.
