# Colossians 2:14

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> having canceled the debt ascribed to us in the decrees that stood against us. He took it away, nailing it to the cross!

## JW Usage

JWs read the "handwritten document that consisted of decrees" as the Mosaic Law. Christians are freed from the Mosaic code but must still meet Jehovah's requirements under "the law of the Christ" — a new set of obligations including field service, meeting attendance, and organisational loyalty.

## Protestant Usage

The Greek cheirographon means a personal debt note — every ancient papyrus attestation confirms this, not a law code. The verb "erased" (exaleipsas) is the same word used for wiping out sins in Acts 3:19 and Isaiah 43:25. Paul says God "erased the handwritten document… and nailed it to the torture stake." A cancelled debt cannot be re-imposed by an organisation. The flow of Colossians 2:13–14 links the erasure directly to forgiveness of trespasses — personal sin-debt, not merely ceremonial law. Colossians 2:20–23 then explicitly condemns submitting to new "do not handle, do not taste, do not touch" regulations, which describes the Watchtower's detailed behavioural code with uncomfortable precision.
