27To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

JW Usage

JWs read as association with Christ rather than personal indwelling. Christ remains in heaven; believers enjoy relational connection to him through the organisation. A mystical "Christ in you" reading of the verse is not the operating category.

Protestant Usage

Paul's phrase is direct: Christ in you, the hope of glory. The hope of glory is located in the person, not in an institution — not in the organisation, not in a faithful slave, and not reserved for a ceiling of 144,000. "Among the nations" is the scope. "In you" is the location. Pair this with — "I am the vine; you are the branches" — no organisational trunk between Christ and the believer. Pair with ("I live by faith in the Son of God… Christ lives in me") and (every believer indwelt by the Spirit of Christ). If Christ lives in you, the doorstep question is whether anything is permitted to stand between you and the indwelling Saviour.

NWT Issue

Where the Greek at reads Χριστὸς ἐν ὑμῖν ("Christ in you"), the NWT expands the preposition to "Christ in union with you." The Greek preposition ἐν here carries the ordinary sense of personal indwelling, matching Paul's parallel at (Χριστὸς ἐν ἐμοί, "Christ in me") and ("Christ is in you"). The NWT's "in union with" appears dozens of times across Paul's letters wherever the simple "in Christ" or "Christ in [someone]" formula occurs, softening personal indwelling into relational association. No standard English translation (ESV, NASB, NIV, NRSV, KJV, CSB) renders the phrase that way. The expansion is interpretive, not lexical.
