# Colossians 1:23

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> if indeed you continue in your faith, established and firm, not moved from the hope of the gospel you heard, which has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.

## JW Usage

JWs acknowledge Colossians 1:23 — the gospel "preached in all creation under heaven" — but treat it as hyperbolic language describing the known first-century world, not as a fulfilment of Matthew 24:14. The Watchtower maintains that Matthew 24:14's worldwide preaching is being fulfilled uniquely by Jehovah's Witnesses in the modern era. Paul's statement is not allowed to undermine the 1914 eschatological framework.

## Protestant Usage

Paul declares — before AD 70 — that the gospel "has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven" (Colossians 1:23). He is making a statement of fulfilment, using the same universal language Jesus used in Matthew 24:14. If "this good news of the Kingdom will be preached in all the inhabited earth" was the condition for the end, Paul considered it met within a generation. Isaiah 11:9 and Habakkuk 2:14 use water imagery — gradual, progressive filling, like a tide coming in. The gospel has spread from twelve disciples to roughly one-third of the world's population. The earth is being filled with the knowledge of God exactly as prophesied — through the Great Commission Jesus gave, not through a single organisation founded in 1881 in Pittsburgh.
