# Colossians 1:19

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him,

## JW Usage

JWs read "all the fullness" as a delegated authority or quality bestowed on Jesus by Jehovah — not as an ontological statement about shared divine nature. The NWT renders Colossians 2:9 as "divine quality" rather than "deity" or "Godhead," weakening the force of the claim. The fullness that dwells in Jesus is understood as the fullness of God's approval and purpose, not the fullness of God's being.

## Protestant Usage

Colossians 1:19 says "God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him," and 2:9 expands: "in him all the fullness of the divine quality dwells bodily" (NWT). Even the NWT's weakened rendering ("divine quality") still places all of divinity's fullness in a human body. Psalm 49:7-9 establishes that no man can redeem his brother — the price is always beyond human reach. Yet Psalm 49:15 says "God will redeem my life." Jesus redeemed the whole world (1 John 2:2). If no man can do this and Jesus did it, Jesus must be more than a man. Hebrews 1:3 calls him "the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of his very being." The ransom's infinite scope — covering billions of sinners across all history — requires a sacrifice of more-than-human worth, which is exactly what the "fullness of divinity dwelling bodily" provides.
