# Acts 8:31

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> “How can I,” he said, “unless someone guides me?” And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.

## JW Usage

Acts 8:31 — "Why, how can I, unless someone guides me?" — is one of the Watchtower's favourite proof-texts that the Bible cannot be read profitably alone. The 1981 Watchtower went further: "Unless we are in touch with this channel of communication that God is using, we will not progress along the road to life, no matter how much Bible reading we do" (1 December 1981, p. 27). The eunuch's admission is read as an endorsement of that gatekeeping model.

## Protestant Usage

Read the whole scene and the conclusion changes. The eunuch was already reading independently before Philip arrived. When he asks for help with one specific Old Testament passage, Philip does not enrol him in a twelve-week study course, does not require him to receive literature first, does not warn him away from private Bible reading, and does not tell him that the text is dangerous without institutional supervision. Philip explains the passage, points him to Jesus (v.35), and baptises him that same day (v.38). One chapter, one passage, one answer, no organisational layer. Pair Acts 8:31 with Acts 17:11 — the Bereans examined Paul's *apostolic* teaching against Scripture and were called "noble" for it. A Berean eunuch reading Isaiah 53 is exactly the model the Watchtower 1981 quote disallows. The biblical pattern has space for helpful teachers without granting any organisation veto power over the reader's direct access to the text.
