# Acts 8:29

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> The Spirit said to Philip, “Go over to that chariot and stay by it.”

## JW Usage

JWs read "the spirit said to Philip" as a figurative expression — the active force moved Philip, impressed a thought, or directed his course. Because the spirit is understood as impersonal, "said" is treated as a metaphor for internal impression rather than discourse.

## Protestant Usage

Read the verse closely: "So the spirit said to Philip: 'Go over and join yourself to this chariot'" (NWT). The spirit does not "impress" or "move" — the spirit *speaks*, and Luke even quotes what was said. Direct discourse with a specific imperative ("Go over and join yourself"), a specific object ("this chariot"), and a specific hearer ("Philip"). A force cannot issue imperative sentences with content. Compare Acts 13:2 in the same narrative: "the holy spirit said, 'Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them'" — the Spirit uses the first-person pronouns "me" and "I" and describes an action he himself has already done ("I have called them"). Agency, self-reference, and discourse are marks of personhood. Pair Acts 8:29 with Acts 13:2, John 14:26 ("the helper… will teach you"), John 16:13 ("the spirit of truth will guide you into all the truth"), and 1 Corinthians 12:11 ("distributing to each one just as it wills") — the Spirit teaches, guides, speaks, wills, and commissions.
