# Acts 5:3

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and withhold some of the proceeds from the land?

## NWT Wording of the Key Phrase

- NWT (1984 edition): "Ananias, why has Satan emboldened you to play false to the holy spirit and to hold back secretly some of the price of the field?"
- NWT (2013 revision): "Ananias, why has Satan emboldened you to lie to the holy spirit and to hold back secretly some of the price of the field?"

## JW Usage

Acts 5:3 ("Ananias, why has Satan emboldened you to lie to the holy spirit and to hold back secretly some of the price of the field?") is awkward for the Watchtower's "holy spirit is an impersonal active force" doctrine, so JWs typically reframe rather than contest it. The standard reading runs: Ananias did not really lie to the spirit itself; he lied to God by deceiving the apostles, who were operating under the spirit. The spirit is treated as a transmission medium — electricity or wind being routed through the apostles — rather than as the personal recipient of the deception. The two consecutive Petrine clauses ("you have not lied to men, but to God" in v4) are read as Peter saying "the Spirit carried your lie to God," not as Peter equating lying-to-the-spirit with lying-to-God. The argument is reinforced for rank-and-file JWs by the NWT's typographic decision to render the words throughout in lowercase ("holy spirit"), which removes the visual signal of personal identity that capital letters would supply.

## Protestant Usage

Acts 5:3-4 is one of the cleanest one-step proofs of both the personhood and the deity of the Holy Spirit, and the Watchtower's reframe collapses on three points. (1) Lying is inherently personal. You cannot lie to electricity; you cannot deceive gravity; you cannot defraud wind. Lying requires a recipient with a mind that can be deceived. Peter says Ananias "lied to the holy spirit" (v3), using the dative — the spirit is the indirect object, the one being lied to. If the spirit were merely an active force, the entire category of "lying to" it is incoherent. (2) Identification, not mediation. Peter does not say "you lied to God through the spirit" or "you lied to the apostles, who carry the spirit." He explicitly distinguishes the two recipients: "You have not lied to men, but to God" (v4). The grammatical contrast is between (a) the spirit in v3 and (b) men/God in v4, with men ruled out and God identified. The only coherent reading is that lying-to-the-spirit IS lying-to-God — not because the spirit is a mailbox, but because the spirit is God. (3) Reinforcement from the wider Pneumatology pattern. The Spirit speaks (Acts 13:2 — "the holy spirit said, 'Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul'"), commissions ("for me… to which I have called them"), grieves (Eph 4:30), wills (1 Cor 12:11 — "just as it wills"), teaches (John 14:26), guides into all truth (John 16:13), and is referred to with the masculine pronoun ekeinos in John 14-16 even though pneuma is grammatically neuter. Jesus deliberately overrides the grammatical gender to mark personhood. None of these are activities an impersonal force can perform. Acts 5:3 is the simplest entry point because it does not require any Greek vocabulary — only the observation that lying requires a person and that Peter equates lying-to-the-spirit with lying-to-God.

## NWT Issue

The NWT's divergence on Acts 5:3-4 is typographic rather than lexical: "holy spirit" is kept lowercase throughout, in contrast to "the Father" and "Jesus Christ" which retain capitalised proper-name treatment. This is part of the NWT's systematic depersonalisation of the Spirit across every pneumatological passage — the same pattern appears at John 14:16-17, 15:26, 16:13-14 (using "that one… it" for masculine *ekeinos* and the masculine reflexive *heautou*), 1 Cor 12:11 ("just as it wills" for the third-person singular *bouletai*), Eph 4:30 ("with which" for "with whom"), 2 Cor 13:14 ("sharing in the holy spirit" for *koinōnia tou hagiou pneumatos*), and Matt 28:19. The Watchtower's own Kingdom Interlinear gloss reads "to pneuma to hagion" (the holy spirit) without any typographic signal that it should be downgraded. Lowercase is not a translation choice grounded in the Greek; it is an editorial cue to the reader. The 2013 revision made a partial correction at John 16:7-8 (using "him" and "he" for some masculine pronouns tied to *paraklētos*) but kept lowercase "holy spirit" and "that one" for *ekeinos* throughout, including at Acts 5:3. The divergence is subtle — Peter's lying-to-the-spirit-equals- lying-to-God argument survives intact in the NWT itself, which is why the verse remains a strong doorstep text even using the JW Bible.
