# Acts 20:30

## Text (Berean Standard Bible)

> Even from your own number, men will rise up and distort the truth to draw away disciples after them.

## JW Usage

This is one of the Watchtower's standard great-apostasy texts. JWs cite "from your own number men will rise up and distort the truth" as proof that the early Christian church was overrun by internal apostates after the apostles died, resulting in a 1,800-year doctrinal blackout that ended only when Charles Russell and the Bible Students recovered the truth in 1870s Pennsylvania. The verse, paired with 1 John 2:18-19 and 2 Thessalonians 2:3, supplies the historical hinge for the Watchtower restoration thesis.

## Protestant Usage

Paul predicts internal dissenters from the Ephesian elders' own ranks — exactly what every faithful church faces in every generation. He does not predict the annihilation of the congregation. The "from your own number" requires a congregation that survives the dissent and continues to be warned and equipped. The cure Paul prescribes (vv.32-35) is the apostolic teaching he has just spent three years delivering — "I commit you to God and to the message of his undeserved kindness." There is no apostolic instruction here to wait nineteen centuries for a future restorer with new light. Read with 2 Thess 2:15 ("hold to the traditions you were taught") and Jude 3 ("the faith once for all delivered"), the apostolic answer to apostasy is the deposit already given, not a future restorer.
