The Watchtower teaches the "last days" began in 1914 when Jesus was invisibly enthroned as king in heaven. is invoked to argue that present conditions — wars, moral decay, intensifying crime — mark this as the 1914-onward period. , where Peter at Pentecost quotes Joel and declares "these are the last days," is handled as a "partial" or "initial" fulfilment, with the "greater" fulfilment reserved for post-1914. The distinction between "last days" in and "last days" in is asserted but never derived from the text itself.

Protestant Usage

The NWT at reads: "'And in the last days,' God says, 'I will pour out some of my spirit on every sort of flesh.'" Peter's introduction in verse 16 is categorical: "this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel." Not "this is like" or "this foreshadows" — this IS. The last days had begun at Pentecost. Six independent New Testament passages confirm the same first-century placement: ("in these last days he has spoken to us by means of a Son"), ("it is the last hour"), (Christ "made manifest at the end of the times"), (Christ appeared "at the conclusion of the systems of things"), ("the ends of the systems of things have arrived" upon first-century believers), and itself. The identical Greek phrase eschatais hemerais appears in both and , ruling out the Watchtower's claim that they refer to two different periods. Paul's imperative in — "from these turn away" — is a present-tense command to Timothy himself, meaningless if the people described would not exist for another nineteen centuries. If the last days began at Pentecost, Jesus did not need to return invisibly in 1914 to inaugurate them — and without 1914 as the start of the last days, the 1919 "inspection" and the entire faithful-slave appointment collapse with it.
