JW Usage

Cited as evidence that baptism must follow correct understanding — these disciples had an incomplete grasp and were baptised again once properly taught. The Watchtower draws from it that valid baptism requires accurate knowledge first, which in practice means the knowledge the organisation supplies.

Protestant Usage

Note precisely what changed and what they were baptised into. These men had received John's baptism, which pointed forward. Paul explains that John told people to believe in the one coming after him — that is, in Jesus. And on hearing this, they were baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus. The correction was Christological. What was missing was Jesus, and what they were baptised into was Jesus. Luke records the same formula at and . So the pattern in Acts is consistent: baptism attaches a person to Christ. Nowhere in the New Testament is anyone baptised into an organisation, a movement, or a teaching body — and Paul specifically rebukes the Corinthians for letting baptism become attachment to a human leader. That is worth asking about without any edge: what does the second question at a JW baptism attach the candidate to, and where is that found in Acts? Compare , , .
